Welcome to the Winchester Ramblers website
Winchester Ramblers is part of the Ramblers Association, a registered charity working for walkers and has been leading organised walks since 1967.
We have a comprehensive programme of walks, but that's only half the story. Winchester Ramblers also works to protect paths and the local countryside. We monitor planning applications, report on path problems ranging from missing signposts and overgrown paths to paths obstructed by barbed wire or flooding. In conjunction with the County Council we carry out practical works such as replacing stiles with kissing gates.
We walk regularly on Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday. Each Sunday we meet at the Durngate car park in Winchester and leave at 9:30 am travelling to the start of the walk. During the week we make our own way to the walk starting point.
In general our walks are in Hampshire and the countryside around Winchester but we often venture further afield walking in Berkshire, Dorset, the Isle of Wight, London, Surrey, Sussex and Wiltshire.
The walks listed in our Walks Programme pages are intended primarily for Ramblers members. Non-members are welcome to join us on two or three walks, although if you walk regularly you'll be expected to join the Ramblers.
We would be pleased to welcome you on one of our regular walks and discover first-hand for yourself the benefits of walking and meeting like-minded people. For information on a walk, click the appropriate button in the Walks programme page in order to send an email to the walks coordinator who will be pleased to send you details.
We offer a wide choice of midweek walks so there is sure to be one to suit you. But please make sure that you're fit enough for the walk. If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short and easy walk first. It's much better to find a walk a little too slow or too easy than to exhaust yourself.
Many of our walks are off-road in rural areas so you will need suitable footwear and clothing for the walk you intend to join. Bring some food and drink and check the weather forecast.
Walk leaders may refuse to accept participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit. When in doubt, contact the leader in advance. For the safety of yourself and others please follow any instructions given by the leader. Although walking is a very low risk activity, no activity is completely without risk and it is your responsibility to behave sensibly and to minimise the potential for accidents.
